چکیده

Artery Arising from the Internal Carotid Artery I read with interest the article by Chan et al. They stated that there was a rare congenital anastomosis between the vertebral artery (VA) and internal carotid artery (ICA) with an absence of communication between the common carotid and cervical ICA. I, however, diagnose that there was an acquired occlusion of the ICA at its origin with a development of collateral circulation from the VA to the ICA via the ascending pharyngeal artery. I am very interested in the diagnosis of the cerebral arterial variations. It is well known that the ascending pharyngeal artery sometimes arises from the proximal ICA. In the patient reported by Chan et al, the ascending pharyngeal artery was well visualized, but opacification of the ICA was faint and delayed. This suggests that there was not a direct anastomosis between the VA and ICA. In patients with congenital absence of the ICA, the common carotid artery and the proximal external carotid artery are usually the same size. In the patient reported by Chan et al, the common carotid artery was definitely larger than the proximal external carotid artery. This fact suggests that there was an acquired occlusion of the ICA at its origin.

Ascending pharyngeal collaterals between the external carotid artery and the occluded internal carotid artery.

A 68-year-old man presented with occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) manifesting as a 6-month history of progressive sensory and motor disturbance of the left lower limb. Angiography clearly demonstrated a collateral arterial network between the ICA and external carotid artery (ECA) through the vidian artery, a small branch of both the ICA and ECA. The vidian artery may form an unusu...

Reconstitution of obstructed ICA via collaterals.

Recently we encountered an unusual case in which a left internal carotid artery (ICA), occluded at its origin by atherosclerosis, was reconstituted in its cervical position by small anastomotic branches of the ascending pharyngeal artery. An initial angiogram demonstrated apparent occlusion of the left ICA at its origin. However, on late films, there was opacification with antegrade flow of the...

Abnormal Origin of Superior Laryngeal Artery and Its Clinical Significance: A Case Report

Superior laryngeal artery (SLA) is one of the main branches of the superior thyroid artery that its main function is to supply blood to the larynx. This artery is accompanied by the internal branch of superior laryngeal nerve; this relation has anatomical and surgical significance. In this paper, a case of anomalous origin of the superior laryngeal artery is reported. Abnormal origin of SLA fro...

Occlusion of the ascending pharyngeal artery during carotid artery surgery: importance and technique.

AIM In surgeries involving clamping, opening and repairing the carotid artery such as carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and proximal anastomosis at radial artery (RA) grafting, back-bleeding, often due to insufficient occlusion of the ascending pharyngeal artery (APA), must be avoided. In 96% of cases the APA originates at the dorsal side of the external carotid artery, while in 2% each it arises at...

A Lumped Parameter Method to Calculate the Effect of Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion on Anterior Cerebral Artery Pressure Waveform

Background and Objective: Numerical modeling of biological structures would be very helpful tool to analyze hundreds of human body phenomena and also diseases diagnosis. One physiologic phenomenon is blood circulatory system and heart hemodynamic performance that can be simulated by utilizing lumped method. In this study, we can predict hemodynamic behavior of one artery of circulatory system (...
